Huawei is calling the B1 as the world’s first hybrid smart band and it’s rightly so. Apart from the usual tasks as a pedometer, sleep tracker, calorie calculator and exercise tracker, the band can also remind you of upcoming activities and has a smart alarm. The one thing that truly sets it apart though is the ability to make and take calls using the ‘watch’ part of the device.

The TalkBand B1 consists of two parts: the actual watch/display and the band/charging cable. The watch part can be conveniently popped out of its band with a push of a button and from there, it becomes a regular Bluetooth headset. There is a small fixture on one of the narrow sides that allows it to stay in place while in the ear and the fixture hides away inside the band when not needed. The downside though is that the watch does not come with a touchscreen. Navigating through the menus is by way of a single button on the side. The button is also responsible for controlling calls.

Huawei website contradicts itself by posting that the device has a Bluetooth 4.1 chip on one page and Bt 3.0 on another, so we can confirm which, but it does come with NFC pairing. When used as a headset, the device is able to deliver a clear output because of the built-in dual-mic noise reduction system. The display will also show Caller ID and phone number when a call comes in.

The 90 mAh battery, though small, allows for the device to be used for up to 6 days as a tracker and offers over 7 hours of talk time when used as a headset. It takes 2 hours to charge and here’s another truly awesome design call: the charging cable is built into the band. So, you don’t need to carry another cable with you for the B1.

The B1 has a 1.4” flexible OLED display, with a 19.3 mm width and weighs in at 26.2 g (headset 9.4 g, band 16.8 g). The device is also IP57 certified so its dust protected but not entirely dust proof and its also waterproof for up to 30 mins under 1 m of water. The band itself is made from thermoplastic vulcanised silicone which makes it durable and provides a comfortable fit for users. Huawei has not mentioned if there will be bands of other sizes as the one on display will proove to be a bit tight for those with thicker wrists.

The TalkBand B1 is now available in Huawei authorised outlets for RM499. Huawei has not provided colour options available here but from what we can see, there are white, black, grey, cyan, yellow and red. The device requires an app to collect the data and to provide statistics. The Android version is already available on the Play Store. The iOS version is expected to arrive some time soon.
