After letting developers toy around with the Gear VR Innovator Edition for S6 since early 2015, Samsung Malaysia Electronics had brought over the consumer version for Malaysians last December called Gear VR. Instead of just for Galaxy S6 of the former, the new VR headset also works with Galaxy Note5, S6 edge, and S6 edge+. Gear VR is available now at 28 selected Samsung Electronics Stores nationwide, and at RM 459 (with GST), the device is priced even lower than its predecessor.

Gear VR features an improved and more ergonomic design than the Innovator Edition. Using the Super AMOLED displays found on the compatible smartphones, the headset provides a vivid and immersive video, gaming, and an overall VR experience. It comes with a new foam cushion for a new level of comfort, and the wider enclosure provides more room for users wearing glasses. There’s also the new touchpad with improved touch experience and larger input area that provides greater control while in use. At 318 grammes, the headset is also 19% lighter than the previous model.

Marking Samsung’s second collaboration with Oculus, Gear VR has received further updates on the software side as well. Several new made-for-VR games have been released such as Land’s End by Ustwo Games, Bandit Six: Salvo by Climax Studios, Dead Secret by Robot Invader, EVE: Gunjack by CCP Games, Anshar Wars 2 by OZWE, and Mortal Blitz VR by Skonec Entertainment, as well as VR experiences such as Ocean Rift aquatic safari park and Finding Monsters interactive adventure. Fans of classic games however can check out the Oculus Arcade section for some retro fun as it offers 20 classic games such as Pac-Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Gauntlet in a virtual arcade-style gaming machine. (We’re hoping the games and features are available in the Malaysian edition too.)

In addition to gaming, Gear VR does videos too. The entire catalog of Netflix original series, documentaries, and films are said to be available to Gear VR users, along with Oculus Video that provides a further 70 feature-length films (from 20th Century Fox and Lionsgate), as well as 9,000 videos from Vimeo, and live broadcasts from the Twitch video portal for gamers.

Other experiences include the over-200,000 immersive photos by world’s leading photographers in 360 degrees with the Oculus 360 Photos experience, along with the Oculus Social virtual space to hang out with friends from all over the world, and the Samsung Internet for Gear VR for browsing the web. Future uses include educational applications, medical trainings, and content aimed at treating illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder or phantom limb syndrome. Most importantly, Gear VR adds another option for an immersive and interactive video experience, that is also priced at a more affordable level.
