The twin drive-bays feature a tray-less design, support hot-swapping, and accept 3.5” hard disks. The units that come with the storage will be loaded with the WD Red NAS drives that are specifically built for NAS systems; where 24×7 types of operations hours are the norm. These drives are powered by NASware 3.0 technology for improved drive reliability and helps to reduce data corruption when there’s a power loss/disruption. Those NAS units with preloaded drives come with RAID 1 configuration and this leaves only half of the advertised space available for consumer use, but this can be re-configured after, to full or to suit the consumers’ needs. For extra space or to quickly transfer files without a computer, the unit’s 2x USB 3.0 expansion ports at the back will come in handy when the need arises.
Managing the unit and the file system can be done in several manners with its intuitive dashboard. Administrators of the EX2 Ultra will be able to create user accounts, configure drive features, and monitor storage usage/stats remotely. With the MyCloud.com web access, or the My Cloud mobile app, accessing or managing the drive can also be done through the internet; without even being on the same wireless network. There’s even the simplified file and folder sharing option where users can send private links to 3rd party recipients, complete with read/write access authorisation, or configured for advanced data-serving options such as FTP, WebDAV, backup, and P2P download, along with Microsoft Active Directory support. In addition, the EX2 Ultra also supports third party apps that include Plex media streaming/management, Milestone Arcus surveillance, aMule, Icecast, Joomla!, Anti-Virus Essentials, WordPress, and SqueezeCenter. Connected devices that support DLNA/UPnP can also stream from the EX2 Ultra, without additional apps, because of the Twonky 7.2, DLNA-certified media server, and built-in iTunes support.
