Not to feel left out of the tech congregation at Mobile World Congress, Oral-B too announced its most high tech device to date. The Oral-B GENIUS toothbrush is claimed to be the most intelligent brushing system available, as well as the world’s first electric toothbrush that is able to see what users don’t. As with most items being shown at the MWC, the price for the Oral-B GENIUS has not been announced yet. The smart toothbrush will be available in selected markets starting July 2016, along with the update to the accompanying app.
Developed by designers at Braun, the Oral-B GENIUS is said to become the most advanced and most connected brushing system that will be available. For the toothbrush system, Oral-B has added what it calls the Position Detection Technology, which works together with Triple Pressure Sensor and the Professional Timer to guide users to brush as how a dentist would want them to.
The Position Detection Technology uses motion sensor from the toothbrush as well as the connected smartphone’s camera to keep track of the areas that the users are brushing. This is to ensure that they don’t miss out on any of the brushing zones that the system maps out. Covering all the brushing zones alone is not enough to ensure healthy gums. This is where Triple Pressure Sensor comes in. It helps to detect and visually indicate whenever any excessive or aggressive pressure is being applied during brushing. When this happens, the speed of the brush head will be automatically reduced and the pulsations stopped. Finally, the Professional Timer ensures that each quadrant of the mouth is being given the exact amount of time it needs with the brush, and to see to it that the 2-minute brushing time, as recommended by dental professionals, is reached.
All of the info from the sensors will be tracked and monitored via the Oral-B App version 4.1 which, as mentioned earlier, is set to arrive in July (the current app version is 3.11 for Android and 3.1 for iOS). The app provides users with instant feedback about their brushing, along with guidance on how much pressure to apply, and the brushing duration. Combined with Oral-B’s Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating Technology and its round brush head, these new features are expected to help users improve their oral health in an intuitive and targeted manner, right within the comfort of their homes.
Oral-B GENIUS comes in a stylish travel case that charges the brush and an additional USB device, such as the smartphone that the brush connects to. Powered by a Lithium-ion battery, the toothbrush will give users two weeks worth of brushing between charges. There’s also the holder for the smartphone that can be attached to the mirror (it’s removable) which holds the smartphone in place while it tracks with the Position Detection Technology. On a more cosmetic-level, users who would want a more personalised feel for their toothbrush can make use of the SmartRing lighting system and the 12 coloured lights that it features.
Oral-B GENIUS is the culmination of Oral-B’s research into brushing habits and the resulting dental issues that users experience. Their research shows that 80% of people spend insufficient time brushing in at least one of the zones in their mouth, and that 60% of people either do not brush their back molars at all or do not spend sufficient time with them. It is also shown that up to 93% of aggressive brushers reduced the force they used with the use of the guidance system, and a reduction by up to 88% for the time spent brushing with excessive force. With the timer from the Oral-B app, users brush about 2 minutes and 27 seconds on average, compared to the less than a minute average for non-users.
