Sony (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd recently released, as part of its 2016 lineup, the new W650D Series BRAVIA LED LCD TVs that come in two screen size options (with a 1080p resolution) — 40 inches (KDL-40W650D) and 48 inches (KDL-48W650D). The inaugural BRAVIA media launch for Malaysia hasn’t even happened yet (April 14th 2016), but you can already buy both 40-inch and 48-inch models today, for RM1,699 and RM2,499 respectively, over at Sony Malaysia’s online store as well as Sony Stores and Sony Centers nationwide. Sony said it is planning to launch more TVs later, but that will be for the 4K HDR models.
The design is sleek and slim, as to be expected from Sony. It has a decent cable management system where connected cables can be routed along the legs of the TV at the back, hiding it from view. Sony also includes its X-Protection PRO technology that protects the TV from dust (due to the lack of ventilation holes at the back), from electrical surges due to lightning, and from short circuit due to extreme moisture.
Though having a 1080p Full HD resolution, W650D comes with X-Reality PRO processing engine that upscales every pixel of low-resolution videos, by intelligently smoothening pixelated parts after matching each scene with Sony’s “special image database”. It then continues to analyze, clean, and refine images to make them sharp and noise-free. The TV also comes with Motionflow XR that reduces motion blur, by inserting frames between the original ones after comparing visual factors on successive frames. Some models also inserts black frames in between original ones for a cinematic look.
Clear Phase audio technology can be found on the W650D too, that samples the speaker frequency and feeds it back to cancel any peaks and dips in the speaker’s natural response. This is said to create a smooth and even audio output. Unfortunately though, Sony’s Bass Reflex Speaker is not found here, as it’s only available for 55- and 65-inch models. W650D seems to only have one speaker, so you’ll probably have it hooked up to a better sound system anyway.
While not the highest end TV by Sony, it does have quite a number of smarts. There’s built-in WiFi (with support for WiFi direct) and even an ethernet port. Besides hooking it up to your home network, you can also use the Photo Sharing Plus feature to project pictures and videos from Android or iOS devices to the TV. Not only that, it also does screen mirroring with Miracast-compatible devices. W650D has an Opera browser as well as Opera TV Store, the latter of which can be used to install smart TV apps like YouTube, Netflix, 500px, et cetera. If you’re the old school type, there are two USB and two HDMI ports for you to plug in your flash drives or laptops. It supports “Super Multi-format Play” that claims to be able to play a “wide range of codecs”.
