On April 5th in the US, Sony announced that its next big update (PlayStation 3.50 System Software Update, codenamed MUSASHI) for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) will arrive the next day, which is April 6th, or around April 7th in this part of the world. There are a few other features to this update, but the most significant one is Remote Play, the ability to now stream PS4 games to Macs and PCs for the first time ever.
PS4’s Remote Play has been around for a while now, but the feature previously only allowed PS4 game streaming to Sony Xperia phones and tablets. This update is a significant one as there are surely many more PS4 gamers out there than there are Xperia device users. Naturally, this feature requires the Remote Play client to be installed on the Mac or PC in question. Here are the compatible operating systems:
- Windows 8.1
- Windows 10 or later
- OS X 10.10
- OS X 10.11
Of course, DualShock 4 controller is also required (seems to only support one at the moment, so no local multiplayer streams), and is done by connecting the gamepad to the computer via USB. Once set up, the games has to be run from the PS4 for it to be streamed on the computer, but Sony only allows up 720p resolution and 60fps streams. The range of resolution and frame rate options are:
- Resolution options: 360p, 540p, 720p (default: 540p)
- Frame rate: Standard (30fps), High (60fps) (default: 30fps)
Besides Remote Play, version 3.50 also brings other “about damn time” features such as the ability to appear offline and to get a notification when a friend gets online. Other more useful features include scheduled events and the ability to see what each member of a party is playing, to easily join a friend’s gaming session.
The release of PlayStation 3.50 System Software Update also coincides with the PlayStation App version 3.50, which brings similar features like:
- The ability to schedule gameplay sessions with friends;
- A new ‘Live from PlayStation’ option — Dailymotion;
- Shared activities of other players will appear in your activities feed.
