Garmin has announced a touchscreen watch that was designed exclusively for golfers. The Approach S6 is Garmin’s latest to be added to its S series golf watches.
The Approach S6 is said to be equipped with an all-new golf watch technology that features a first-of-its-kind swing metrics and training tools. Data captured from the watch can be used to calculate SwingTempo, and SwingStrength and these can be use in TempoTrainer to improve swing consistency and synchronisation. These tools make the S6 an ideal device that can be used everywhere; driving range, tee box and on the green.
The S6 can also display the actual course that your game is being played on. The CourseView function was previously only available on handheld devices (which Garmin also makes with its G series devices) but now, Garmin has squeezed it all into a watch. The CourseView function has 30,000 international courses and it doesn’t require any subscription or fees. The maps can be updated and CourseView comes with additional features such as GreenView, Touch Targeting, and PinPointer.
Keeping a scorecard is also a breeze with the S6. You can save, review, and share your scores as well as stats by syncing the watch to the Garmin Connect service. Additional details such fairways hit, greens in regulation, shot distance, and number of putts can also be uploaded using either your computer or your mobile device.
The watch is Garmin’s first to have a high-res colour touchscreen. The S6 is also Garmin’s slimmest and lightest but it still has an impressive 10 hour battery life in full GPS mode or a mind numbing 20 weeks in watch mode. As a smartwatch, the S6 has Smart Notifications and can received text messages, emails and missed call alerts from your smartphone. The watch only works with iPhone 4S or later but Garmin expects to push out support for Android devices too this summer. The S6 is also built tough to withstand rainstorms and is water resistant to 50 meters (5 ATM). The added functionalities are also the reason why the S6 is the most expensive in Garmin’s S series golf watches.

The bands come in combinations of Black/White (band/highlights), White/Black, Black/Red, Black/Blue, Black/Orange, White/Orange and Violet/White.
The biggest problem now, for people who are interested to get one, is that the watch is only available in a few selected countries. To describe this in golfing terms: we’ll just have to allow other countries to ‘play through’. Then again, golf is a game of patience right?
