Samsung Maestros Academy was established this year as a platform for experienced artisans to share their knowledge and shape the minds of young students. The academy is the result of a collaboration between Samsung and ad agency Leo Burnett in Italy. The academy has many courses for students to engage with their mentors and create projects of their own. The one product that had garnered a lot of attention is the Samsung Smart Bike and it was first introduced to the world during the Milan Design Week this year.

The Samsung Smart Bike is the first bicycle that has been designed around the idea of keeping the rider safe at all times. Here are some of the features that the designers have incorporated into it:

  • It has an innovative frame design and the curvy aluminium tubes neutralise the most dangerous vibrations to the human body. This provides extra-comfort when riding through uneven city pavements.
  • Safety system is controlled by a Samsung smartphone using a companion app.
  • Has 4 laser beams to create a virtual bike lane that also serves as a warning to other vehicles on the road.
  • The laser beam can also be set to turn on automatically using the smartphone’s light sensor.
  • GPS tracking tool informs local authorities on routes which need to be turned into real bike lanes.
  • Safety rear camera that projects live video to the smartphone of what’s happening at the rear as well as approaching vehicles.

The components of the ‘smart’ side of the bike are integrated into the frame of the bike. These include the battery, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth + Arduino module, 4 laser projectors and a digital camera.

The bike was produced with the combination of experience from famed bike frame maestro Giovanni Pelizzoli and the talent of young student Alice Biotti. The two individuals, from two different generations of bike building, worked together to preserve and at the same time to innovate on an old technology. There’s also another good reason why the work done on the Smart Bike is important. The Istituto Nazionale di Statistica (ISTAT – National Institute of Statistics) has confirmed that in Italy, bicycles are the most unsafe vehicles on the road and has the highest mortality index.

The bike is just a concept currently and neither Samsung nor the makers have set a price for the bike. There’s also no information if the bike will actually be mass produced, to have them available anywhere.
