The Emmy award winning GoPro cameras have a rising hero to carry on the torch. The new HERO4 series were finally announced last September but can already be found here in Malaysia. The HERO4 series comprises, as usual, of the Black and Silver editions but this time around, instead of labelling its entry level device as White, GoPro is simply calling it HERO.

The top of the line is the HERO4 Black which is capable of shooting 4K videos up 30 fps and 1080P at 120 fps (slow-motion). The HERO4 Silver is almost as capable but loses out to Black in the number of video capture options available. The cameras are the most advanced GoPro ever and the image signal processor is 2X more powerful than its predecessor.

Both cameras are mostly similar in terms of specifications and features: 12 MP, professional grade low light performance, WiFi, Bluetooth, simultaneous photo+video, looping video, Protune option, 1,160 mAh li-ion battery, micro HDMI port, GoPro App support and microSD card slot that accepts up to 64 GB, among others. In fact, there are not that many differences except that Black has higher bitrate for video (60 vs 45 Mb/s), external microphone support, and the earlier mentioned video capture options but the Silver trumps the other with its built-in touch display.

The entry-level HERO on the other hand has a lot more missing. First up, there’s no 4K video and 1080P is the highest quality here. The camera is a 5 MP affair and gone are WiFi, Protune, and it’s not even compatible with the GoPro App. For a complete list of features, do check out the comparison page to see differences between the devices.

The cameras are officially distributed in Malaysia by Funsportz Sdn Bhd and a spokesperson for the company informed us that sales have been good and that they’re completely sold out. Funsportz also confirmed that the take-up of the HERO4 models is better than the previous, and that it has plans to bring in the entry-level HERO, possibly next year. The HERO4 Black and HERO4 Silver are priced locally at RM 1,849 and RM 1,499 respectively.

The listed price for the devices in the US are: US$ 499.99 (~RM 1,673) for HERO4 Black, US$ 399.99 (~RM 1,339) for HERO4 Silver and US$ 129.99 (~RM 435) for HERO. The HERO4 Black and Silver versions will soon come in 2 additional variants, on top of the standard, to suit the recording needs: they are HERO4 Black / Surf, HERO4 Black / Music, HERO4 Silver / Surf and HERO4 Silver / Music. These editions will differ in the types of mounts and the protective case that will included in the purchase.

Finally, what’s a new GoPro camera without an epic video. This one was shot, in many different countries around the world, with the HERO4 Black and showcases the camera’s ability to work in different climates. I highly recommend watching this in all its 4K glory, and in full screen.
