So, you’ve used a watch based pulse or heart rate monitor and you’re still not happy with the results you’ve been getting. Before you invest in a dedicated monitor, that straps onto your chest, you might want to check out the new Jabra Sport Pulse Wireless earbuds. What’s an earphone got to do with heart rate monitoring? Every other time it doesn’t but in this case, Jabra says ‘Everything’.
The Sport Pulse Wireless earbuds offer an all-in-one training solution as it is the world’s first to combine an in-ear biometric heart rate monitor and Dolby enhanced sound capability. Together with the Jabra Sport Life app, the earbuds will help users not only to plan and track workouts but also to evaluate the activities that has been carried out. Users can adjust the heart rate zone and set goals based on distance, time or calories burnt.
In order to find out effective the Sport Pulse Wireless was in measuring heart rates, Jabra had commissioned Campbell University in North Carolina to conduct trials on runners using a treadmill. The earbuds were pitted against a medical electrocardiogram (ECG) and the results showed how accurate the buds were; proving the advance nature of this new technology. The monitor is embedded into the left earbud so you’ll only need to put in that side, if you want, to get the reading.
The earbuds come with Bluetooth 4.0 LE chip and the built in battery will keep it going for up to 5 hours of talk/music time. The Bluetooth connection has a range of up to 10 metres and although you can pair with up to 8 devices, only 2 devices can connect simultaneously. You can also pair them using the built-in NFC chip. What’s disappointing though is that it’ll take about 2 hours to charge, but the 10-day standby time should soothe some nerves.
The in-ear type buds use 6 mm dynamic speakers and are capable of hitting a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) of 94 dB @ 1 Khz & 1 mW. The buds have a frequency range of 20 Hz – 20 kHz and an impedance of 16-ohms. The silicone tips and the earphone design offer passive noise reductions of about 15 dB. There’s even a MEMS technology based microphone with a frequency range of 100 to 8,000 Hz to handle calls.
The Sport Pulse Wireless has been IP55 certified which means that its dust protected and is able to handle jets of water. The device has also been tested against drops, temperatures and humidity. It weighs 16 g, and comes with 4 sets of EarGels, 3 sets of EarWings, 1 FitClip, 1 USB cable, and finally a protective carry case. The provided EarWings will help to keep the buds in place even when there are a lot of movements during activities.
